چکیده

This study demonstrates the electrorotation of single microalgae cells captured in the center of a set of planar microelectrodes within a microfluidic device, and compares the rotational speeds of single microalgae cells obtained in experiments and theoretical calculations. Negative dielectrophoresis force and rotational electric field are generated by the microelectrode set to position and rotate single microalgae cells. The rotational speed of single microalgae cells in the microfluidic device is calculated automatically using an image-processing algorithm. The electrorotation spectra of microalgae cells enduring different periods of nitrogen starvation agree with the simulation results for lowand high-lipid content cells. These results show the great potential of using electrorotation in quantifying the dielectric characteristics of microalgae cells.

Dielectric properties of alginate beads and bound water relaxation studied by electrorotation.

The electrical and dielectric properties of Ba2+ and Ca2+ cross-linked alginate hydrogel beads were studied by means of single-particle electrorotation. The use of microstructured electrodes allowed the measurements to be performed over a wide range of medium conductivity from about 5 mS/m to 1 S/m. Within a conductivity range, the beads exhibited measurable electrorotation response at frequenc...

Single cell dielectric spectroscopy

Over the last century a number of techniques have been developed which allow the measurement of the dielectric properties of biological particles in fluid suspension. The majority of these techniques are limited by the fact that they only provide an average value for the dielectric properties of a collection of particles. More recently, with the advent of microfabrication techniques and the Lab...

Viability of Giardia intestinalis cysts and viability and sporulation state of Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts determined by electrorotation.

Electrorotation is a noninvasive technique that is capable of detecting changes in the morphology and physicochemical properties of microorganisms. Electrorotation studies are reported for two intestinal parasites, Giardia intestinalis and Cyclospora cayetanensis. It is concluded that viable and nonviable G. intestinalis cysts can be differentiated by this technique, and support for this conclu...

Automated electrorotation to reveal dielectric variations related to HER-2/neu overexpression in MCF-7 sublines.

PURPOSE Electrorotation (ROT) is a technique that allows for determination of the dielectric properties of living cells when exposed to a rotating electric field. We evaluated the ROT behavior of MCF/neo and p185(neu) transfectancts MCF/HER2-11 and MCF/HER2-18 to investigate whether differences in HER-2/neu expression were associated with differences in dielectric properties in these cells. E...
